When You Stop Over-Functioning and Nothing Feels the Same

Why changing how you show up in a relationship often creates distance before it creates something more honest.

There is a moment in a relationship when something shifts, and it is often far quieter than you expect.

It does not arrive with a clear decision or a dramatic conversation. It happens in the subtle awareness that you have been carrying baggage that isn’t yours, contorting yourself in ways that feel almost automatic, and calling it love, support, or care.

For me, it was recognizing how often I was anticipating and interpreting what wasn’t being said, minimizing my own needs, and acting from unexpressed or implied expectations. At some point, I had to be honest with myself that it wasn’t creating a mutually respectful relationship. It was creating a version of me that was slowly disappearing inside the dynamic of codependency.

So I got clear on what I valued and how I wanted to operate within the relationship, and I changed my patterns of behaviour. I began responding differently.

Not in a way that required explanation, and not in a way that demanded anything from the other person. I simply stopped overextending. I remained present, I stayed open, but I no longer stepped into roles that were never mine to carry—and no longer wanted to carry.

And that is when everything became unclear and uncomfortable.

The dynamic felt muddled.

The silence between conversations stretched longer.

There was uncertainty in myself, and in my vision of the relationship and how I showed up in it.

Would the relationship shift?

Would it fall away?

There were moments where it would have been easier to return to what was familiar, to smooth things over, and to restore a sense of connection by becoming who I had been before.

To sit in the uncomfortable known.

But I didn’t.

What I am learning is that when you elevate your sense of self, the relationships around you do not immediately adjust. There is a period where nothing feels resolved, where there is no clear feedback, and where you are left standing in a space that feels unfamiliar and, at times, scary.

It would be easy to interpret that space as something going wrong.

But I am beginning to understand that it is not a breakdown. It is a reorganization.

Much like when rain falls into a lake, there are ripples, and once the rain stops, the water settles again—accommodating what has changed.

The work is not to rush in and close that gap or fix anything. It is to remain within it, to feel what arises without abandoning yourself to make it more comfortable—for the old version of yourself or the other person—and to allow something more honest to take shape.

Because when you hold a new standard, something will inevitably shift.

The relationship may meet you there.

It may create distance.

And it will definitely move between the two as it finds its footing.

What matters is that you maintain your inner resonance and hold the standard to cultivate a more balanced, true, and intimate version of what was.

I am no longer interested in maintaining connection at the expense of myself, based on preconceived societal notions of what relationships should look like. I am far more interested in what becomes possible when I remain rooted in who I am and allow everything around me to reorganize from that place.

There is a different kind of love that exists in these relationship dynamics. It is steady, unconditional, and clear, and it does not require me to disappear or minimize who I am in order to be sustained.

And perhaps that is what real growth asks of us.

Not to force change, but to hold who we are becoming long enough for life to reorganize to meet us there.

If you are in this space right now—

where you can see the pattern, feel the shift, and are learning how to hold yourself differently in it—

know that this part is not meant to be rushed.

It is meant to be lived.

And if you feel the pull to move through this with more support, more clarity, and more depth, this is the space I hold in my work.

A place to expand your awareness, refine how you show up in real time, and clear what no longer holds at the level you are stepping into.

You are welcome to step into that when it feels right for you.
